Node.js was introduced 10 years ago. With over one billion downloads, it is one of the most popular projects on GitHub and fastest-growing open-source projects. It is used for web applications and also by the Zowe project for the command-line interface and Zowe Desktop server components that run on z/OS. IBM ported it so you can run Node.js applications on z/OS without the need to have Linux or zCX. Co-location with the data is one of the greatest benefits of running it on z/OS. In this session, you will learn how to install Node.js on z/OS, the key concepts of NPM and developing Node.js applications in JavaScript and TypeScript, how to translate between ASCII/EBCDIC, and how to build native extensions that can use z/OS services. You will see how to access VSAM datasets and use mainframe security in Node.js applications.
